Planting Week!

Hey guys! (Sneha)
We hope your week has been FANTASTIC!!!!!

In science this week we have planted Red Romaine Lettuce and our teacher let us plant our own lima bean seeds (Daniella). We got to choose what to grow it in - soil, clay, humus, water, or a mixture of these.

Below are a few pictures with some captions to explain them. We hope you like!

In reading this week we just finished Humphrey this week.(Daniella) It was a really funny book and we would like to recommend it to people who have a good sense of humor  (Antonio). We started a new book and eventually in the book Sam realizes that the school is ALIVE (Hemi) The book is called Eerie Elementary - The School is Alive. We have also been reading fables. Geometry Power Week

G'day mate (Gianluca)

In reading this week we have been working on character traits and the character feelings (Huai). We have also been working on reading our just right books and building stamina (Daniella). We have been reading two books and one of them is funny...it is called The World According to Humphrey (Katharine). Another book we are reading is called Because of Winn Dixie. This book is about a girl who helps a dog named Winn Dixie and they become best friends who have adventures (Jacklyn).

In writing we have been writing our personal narratives. Mostly everyone is still writing the beginning and middle (Gabrielle). Today we were teaming up with partners and the partners helped up fix or add on to our story (Sneha). We will continue working in our partnerships throughout the writing process (Miss Sullivan).

In math we have been working with shapes. Our unit is called geometry (Brandy). We learned about what a polygon is (Faris) - a closed 2d figure with straight lines and more than three sides (whole class).

In social studies  we have been learning about citizenship and how to respect others (Brendan). We made posters of how to be a good citizen and they are displayed in our classroom! (Huai)

Blasting into space week

Good day everyone! (Brendan)

In reading this week we have been working in centers and increasing our reading skills (Katharine). We also have been working on reading responses (Joey). Our focus this week has been on character traits (Gianluca). A character trait is a word to describe the character's personality (how they act) (Jacklyn and whole class). We try to figure out different character's feelings and actions (Brandy).

In writing we are doing personal narratives. These are true stories from our lives (Alfredo). We are doing small moment stories (Rehan). We are organizing it from beginning, middle, and end. We have to write about a place, thing, or person that is important in our lives (Daniella). Also, we have been learning what a sequence is and using that for our small moment story (Gabrielle).

In math we have been learning about rounding to the nearest tens and hundred (Faris). We have been finishing up our rounding unit and today we did our math test (Hemi).

In science we have been working on the solar system (Sneha). Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (dwarf planet) (whole class). Our sentence to remember the order is My very educated mother just served us nine pizzas (whole class)

A growth mindset is when you try something that you haven't done and you just keep on trying when something is hard (Huai). A growth mindset is also when you have an open mind about things and you are positive. The other mindset is a fixed mind set is when you think you cannot grow your brain and quit (Daniella).

First blog post of the year!

Thanks for checking out our blog! This is a place where we will post what we are learning in each subject as well as some other fun things we have been up to. Every Friday we will work as a class to complete a blog post. I will also try my hardest to upload pics (see below for one from our first week)

We have had a great first few weeks of school in third grade! In reading we have been learning about nonfiction and identifying text features. It is important for us to be able to find the title, headings, bold words, photographs, charts, labels captions, glossary, and index! We will continue to read nonfiction throughout the year. NewsELA is a great website that has a lot of current news articles that are written for kids. We have also gotten our first copy of Time for Kids and will be reading these in small groups and independently. This week we have started our new unit on characters and character traits.

In writing we have been working on the basics of grammar: identifying types of nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc. We will be starting our word work next week and will continue to work on sight word fluency. Our first big writing project is a personal narrative.

In math we have been working on addition and subtraction problems (single and multistep) as well as rounding. It is important to know that we must underline when solving a problem to show what we are looking for. We must also label our answers to get full credit! Our next unit will be geometry (identifying shapes and their attributes)

In science we are finishing up our solar system unit! Next we will be moving into our first social studies unit on communities and the economy.

Check out a picture from our first week of school! This was a fun getting to know you activity where we had to put together a giant puzzle..without talking. The puzzle is now hanging in our room with all our names on it :)

Thanks for reading!
